With school back in session, so are a lot of sports. Not only will athletes need cleats, workout gear, and a uniform, but a sports physical as well! A sports physical may seem like a hassle and inconvenience to some, but it has an important purpose- to make sure the athlete is safe to participate in the upcoming sports season!
What Does a Sports Physical Check?
A sports physical includes looking at family history and administering a physical exam. A physical exam will check and measure height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, vision, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, throat, posture joints and flexibility.
Is a Sports Physical the Same as a Normal Physical?
No. A sports physical is not the same as a normal physical. A sports physical looks at health in relation to a sport, whereas a normal physical checks overall health. Even though it may seem like an extra task, it’s important to receive both physicals because they both have an important purpose!
Why is a Sports Physical Important?
A sports physical looks to see if an athlete is safe to participate in the upcoming sports season. It’s not meant to keep athletes away from the sport, or seem as a punishment. It’s a way to learn about the athlete’s health, seek additional medical attention if needed, and an opportunity to gain healthy tips from health professionals for the upcoming sports season.
